Account book kept by Green and a manuscript of his autobiography (1865 and 1888?). "Mess book" keeps account of commissary stores received by Green and their price from Jan.-Apr. 1865 while he was with the 13th N.Y. Vol. Cavalry. His autobiography focuses on his service in the Civil War and includes an account of his time before the war as a horse trader and whale oil gauger in New York City, his experiences as commander of the City Horse Guards in 1861, the departure of General Jos ́Antonio Paez of Venezuela and his disinternment in 1888, the first recruiting of cavalry for the war in New York, anti-Union sentiment in the city, his work inspecting horses for purchase by the government, the dishonesty of new York horse dealers, the training of the cavalry, his service with the 5th and 13th New York Cavalry, frequent mentions of Gen. Chester A. Arthur and Gen. Thomas B. Van Buren, comments on Gen. John Pope and Gen. Porter Hatch, the second Battle of Bull Run, and encounters with Col. John S. Mosby's "guerillas" and Gen. Lafayette C. Baker's "detectives" (340 p.). Inserted are a short account of how a young man conspired to get a commission without actually serving his time in the cavalry and copies of records concerning Green's petition for a pension in 1888.
